ZNZist is a coverage-ranked news page for Zanzibar and Tanzania, in the style of Techmeme: the stories most outlets are reporting right now, grouped so you see each one once, with every other outlet covering it listed underneath.
ZNZist is run by a group of investors with various projects in Zanzibar, who built it because there was no single place to follow news about the islands and the mainland together. It is not a media company and carries no advertising; where a story touches a project the group is involved in, the page says so.
ZNZistdoes not write news. A pipeline reads the public feeds of the outlets listed on the front page, groups articles that cover the same event into one story, and ranks stories by how many independent outlets are covering them, how authoritative those outlets are, and how recent the coverage is. Every headline links to the publisher’s own page, and the “Also covering” list shows who else reported it.
An automated relevance check keeps the feed to news about Zanzibar and Tanzania, with Zanzibar stories ranked first. Headlines in Swahiliare machine-translated into English and marked “translated”; the original is always one click away. The △▽ controls on each story record whether readers want more or less of it, and feed back into ranking.
ZNZist Weekly Zanzibar News Digestis produced from the week’s top stories. The hosts, Alia and Badru, are synthetic voices; the script is generated from the published reporting and the full transcript is published with every episode.
@marhabazanzibar on X posts a selection of the day’s stories automatically, crediting the outlet that reported each one.
